"Seahorses" - an exhibit by Xavier Cortada
Project Seahorse presents "Seahorses" - an exhibit by Xavier Cortada from 1 April to 30 April. This exhibit is part of our new initiative - “Seahorses: Magical Creatures in Our Backyard” - which will build awareness about seahorses and other syngnathids in Biscayne National Park and inspire residents of Miami-Dade County (FL, USA) to take action to protect the park and their oceans. Charismatic symbols of the seagrasses, mangroves, reefs and estuaries they call home, seahorses are flagship species for a wide range of marine conservation issues in Biscayne National Park. This campaign is made possible through the generous support of the Herbert W. Hoover Foundation. The Herbert W. Hoover Foundation takes a leadership role in funding unique opportunities that provide solutions to issues related to the community, education, and the environment.

11th Annual Women In Distress Starfish Luncheon
This annual event helps Women In Distress (WID) provide critical services, such as emergency safe shelter, to adults and children who are fleeing abusive homes. Since 1974, WID has been providing an environment that helps participants recover from the traumatic effects of victimization and develop an understanding and awareness of the dynamics of domestic violence by empowering them to gain independence and self-sufficiency. The agency currently operates a 132-bed shelter as well as an outreach center at the Jim & Jan Moran Family Center in Deerfield Beach. All services are free and confidential. Last year, WID provided more than 30,000 nights of safe shelter, answered more than 20,000 calls to its 24-Hour Crisis Hotline and provided nearly 30,000 hours of counseling and therapy. Half of those served by WID are children, with the average age of five-years-old, with the demand for child therapy and counseling continuing to grow. The luncheon will begin with a silent auction at 11 a.m., followed by the program at noon. Individual luncheon tickets are $100, table sponsorships are $2,500, and journal ads start at $250. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Auction items include travel packages, sports and cultural events, special experiences plus a variety of fashion, art, jewelry and other unique items. Raffle tickets for a chance to win a stay at Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas may be purchased online in advance and at the luncheon for $20 each or six for $100. Women In Distress will recognize BSO and Sheriff Scott Israel for their many collaborative partnerships and for taking a strong stand against domestic violence each and every day; Broward County Chiefs of Police Association for being at the forefront of examining issues surrounding access and safety for survivors of domestic violence, training for law enforcement officers and victim advocates, as well as community policing to protect all citizens; Humane Society of Broward County for being an important community friend to the families helped by WID, recognizing the linkages in pet abuse to abuse of children and partners; and the Walmart Foundation for supporting food and emergency shelter needs for survivors of domestic violence and their children at the shelter. 14 Year Old Canadian Piano Prodigy Leonid Nediak
Fourteen year old Canadian pianist Leonid Nediak has already established himself as an important artist. He is presented in Miami as part The Festival’s acclaimed series "Masters and Prodigies of Tomorrow". Nediak was the grand prize winner of the 2013 and 2014 Canadian Music Competition, both times receiving the highest marks ever awarded in this event. " Leonid Nediak, 13, drew the grander assignment of the Piano Concerto No. 27 K. 595 . Throughout the playing was lucid and nicely judged: the balance of left and right hands in the innocent finale suggested an awareness of the potential charm of that persistent six-eight accompaniment. The minor-mode second theme of the first movement had the right air of melancholy... The trajectory of this artist is clearly upward." PROGRAM: BACH, 2 Preludes and Fugues from W.T.C. Book 1, CHOPIN 2 Nocturnes and Polonaise No. 5, BEETHOVEN Sonata No. 3 Mvmt 1, NEDIAK Fantasie No. 1, RACHMANINOFF: Lilacs Op. 21 No. 5 (arr. S. Rachmaninoff), Prelude Op. 32 No. 12 in G sharp minor, Vocalise Op. 34 No. 14 (arr. E. Wild), Prelude Op. 23 No. 5 in G minor
